Frequently Asked Questions

A:

Throughout the duration of a school's survey administration period, we send confirmation emails, reminder emails, and other instructions and information to the email address of the person who was designated survey administrator (the person who registered your school). In addition, we send instructions on how to access a school's or district's unique My Voice Report. To ensure that your survey administrator receives these emails, he or she must make sure that his or her spam blocker does not block emails from @pearsonfoundation.org.

A:

The best individual to be a survey administrator (usually, the individual who registers for your school) is the one who will be scheduling survey administration and signing in regularly for survey reports. Typically, the survey administrator is a guidance counselor, a teacher, a principal or other school administrative staff.

  • Create a bookmark for your school's unique survey link. (Your school's survey administrator will provide you with this link).

Survey Administrators/Teachers:

(See Appendix 4 of the Administrator's Guidebook for Protocol Sheets: My Voice Surveys)

Below are a few tips to ensure a smooth experience when administering surveys online:

  • If individuals feel rushed or spend too much time on each individual page of the survey, they may not complete it. After about 10 minutes have passed, visually check and make sure that they are on Section III of the survey.
  • Make sure that individuals have reached the final page that states: "Thank you for taking our survey. Your response is very important to us."

When individuals are positioned in front of computers on which the surveys are ready to be administered:

  • Announce the instructions listed in Appendix 4 of the Administrator's Guidebook (Protocol Sheets: My Voice Surveys).
  • After an individual completes the survey, visually check to see if they have arrived at the last page of the survey that states: "Thank you for taking our survey. Your response is very important to us."

  • Then, have him or her close their browser.

What should our technical staff do to ensure that the My Voice Surveys are ready to be administered?

In a computer lab, prior to administering the survey, on each computer to be used:

  • Open a browser window. (The survey will work with any browser.)
  • Create a bookmark for your school's unique survey link. (Your school's survey administrator will provide you with this link).
  • Find the bookmark for your school's unique survey link (this survey link will be provided by the school administrator prior to survey administration).
  • The survey will now be ready for individuals to complete.

As George Bernard Shaw once said, "England and America are two countries separated by a common language." The U.K. and U.S. versions of the survey differ only in certain terminology. For example, while in the U.K. the term "university" is preferred for post-secondary education, the term "college" may refer to a secondary school. Also in the U.K., "administration" refers to support staff roles, such as secretaries and administrative assistants, not to school leadership. Thus the U.K. version uses terminology appropriate to the local understanding. There are no substantive differences between the two surveys.

A:

The survey is modeled on the Quaglia Institute for Student Aspirations' 8 Conditions. Some survey items were added in each of the 8 Conditions, and a subset of questions relating to "Role of the Parents" was eliminated.

My Voice Surveys are available for students in grades 3 through 12 (or Key Stage 2 and Years 7-13 in the UK). For more information on the surveys, please visit our Surveys page.

A:

My Voice Surveys, powerful tools for initiating innovative, meaningful school reform, ask students, staff and parents about school. The results will provide educators with detailed student, staff and parent data, which can be used to improve teaching and learning.

A:

My Voice Surveys assess student aspirations, as well as parent and staff perceptions, by asking participants to respond to statements about the 8 Conditions That Make a Difference, as well as demographic questions. Participants respond to the 8 Conditions statements on a five-point Likert scale ranging from "Strongly Agree" to "Strongly Disagree." The survey takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. By asking students, parents and staff how they perceive the school environment, My Voice provides educators with a powerful tool for understanding both what motivates and inspires students to achieve and how well students believe their school is meeting those objectives.

National reports based on the My Voice Survey are regularly made available at www.qisa.org. However, be aware that the most illuminating comparisons are internal; and external comparisons, while interesting, are not always helpful. To read more about this, see http://www.qisa.org/publications/docs/InterpretingMyVoiceSurvey.pdf.
